Add an Altrusan the Mardi Gras Way!
The Membership Committee under the chair of Kathy Demarest, did an outstanding job as they sent out invitations to prospective new members and hosted the party. Twenty-five members and twelve guests attended in the beautifully decorated purple, gold, and green colored room. We dined on a feast of home-made cornbread, honey butter, gumbo and jambalaya over rice, black eyed pea salad, fruit salad, and to top it all off we ate an authentic New Orleans's King's Cake ordered from a southern bakery. We were all adorned with beads, feathers, and costume Mardi Gras masks. Ilona Kerby explained how the structure of Altrusa is like a cheeseburger. Lois Brudi talked about our China Orphanage Project. Judy Flaskerud was our Mistress of Ceremonies.

Celebration of Literacy

After Altrusa International adopted a focus on Literacy in 2001 the Longview-Kelso club decided to spearhead a community wide Celebration of Literacy Week. With a committee of Altrusans and other community members we continue planning for our Annual Celebration of Literacy.

During the week the 2,000+ books purchased and donated will be given away at schools, shelters, community literacy events, and the jail. Anyone interested in volunteering for the Celebration may do so by emailing Ilona Kerby just click here.

I Have A Dream Project
Is another major service project for Altrusa International of Longview/Kelso. In addition to contributing $5,000 per year, for ten years, to support the project club members volunteer to help tutor students, serve as mentors, supervise students during field trips and participate in special events.

China Orphan Project
As members of an International service organization we also have the opportunity to give service on an international level.  Altrusa International of Longview-Kelso through the China Orphan Project provides valuable service in China. From Hugging Grannies who provide the much-needed human contact for infants and young children, to foster care placement, school tuitions and medical/surgical care the needs are many. Our dollars make it possible for children to grow up in a healthier environment, attend university or vocational school and become productive adults.

Fundraising Activities

To raise the money Altrusa International of Longview-Kelso gives away in our community we conduct numerous fundraising activities from sales of gift-
wrap, Entertainment Books, pecan sales and manning the Seattle to Portland Bicycle Ride food stop. The biggest and most well known fundraiser is our sales
of Elephant Ears. Persons of all ages find the warm, cinnamon sugar coated treat well worth the 30 to 60 minute wait, in long lines, during the Fourth of July celebration at Lake Sacajawea.
