Albany's Annual Book Drive

Albany Altusa's annual book drive collected over 2,000 books, both fiction and non-fiction in connection with Make a Difference Day.

Large print books and books on tape were donated from the local library and collection boxes were placed in banks and stores.

The books were distributed to the Senior Center and Retirement Homes. Member reorganized the Senior Center Library, sorting and adding new books. A new project with the Senior Center sent books to each "Meals on Wheels" recipient on delivery day. Members were given a preferences of seniors on the route and added books or tapes to each delivery.

Happy Shoppers at Altrusa Kidzshop

Over 260 low income children met in August to participate in Altrusa's annual Kidzshop at Heritage Mall. Each child was given from $125 to $145 dollars in gift cards for new school clothes and shoes.
A volunteer shopper accompanies the children. Children are chosen by school counselors and teachers, the Linn Benton Housing Authority and Boys & Girls Club members. They also receive free Membership in the boys & Girls Club and a backpack loaded with school supplies and toiletries. A local credit union provides donuts, muffins and drinks after shopping, while parents wait in the food court with free coffee. Our goal of $30,000 for the event was raised with grants coming from businesses and Altrusa as well as many individual donations. Altrusa is recognized in the community for Kidzshop, but the best comes from the happy smiles from the kids.
